ABOUT ME

   At just 24 years old, Ian Coury has established an international career, performing throughout Brazil, Panama, Mexico, Europe, and the United States. He is recognized as one of the leading exponents of the new generation of 10-string mandolinists, expanding the possibilities of the instrument through Brazilian music and contemporary jazz. He has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Danilo Pérez, John Patitucci, Paquito D’Rivera, Rosa Passos, Hamilton de Holanda, and Toninho Horta.

   Born in Brasília, Brazil, Coury began playing the mandolin at age eight at the Escola de Choro Raphael Rabello. His musical journey later brought him to Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Contemporary Writing and Production and a Master’s degree in Contemporary Performance from the Berklee Global Jazz Institute.

   Coury was named Best Instrumentalist at Brazil’s National FM Radio Festival in 2020. His recent work has been released by Biscoito Fino, one of Brazil’s most prestigious independent record labels, whose catalog includes celebrated artists such as Chico Buarque and Gal Costa. His latest projects feature collaborations with major figures in Brazilian samba, including Xande de Pilares and Pretinho da Serrinha.

   Alongside his performing and recording career, Coury is an active educator and has given workshops and masterclasses at Harvard University, MIT, and the University of Colorado Boulder. Since 2022, he has also taught Brazilian Choro Mandolin through Peghead Nation to students around the world.
